What is IELTS for UKVI?
IELTS for UKVI is a UK Home Office designation, not a different exam. The UK government approves certain test centres as Secure English Language Test (SELT) providers, with extra requirements around identity verification, monitoring, and reporting.
When you sit IELTS at one of these centres under SELT conditions, your result is issued as IELTS for UKVI — usable as proof of English for UK visa and immigration purposes.
Everything a candidate experiences in the exam room — the four sections, the difficulty, the marking — is the standard IELTS Academic or General Training test. Preparation for one is preparation for the other.

Do you actually need IELTS for UKVI?
This is where candidates waste the most money. Broadly, you need UKVI only when your specific visa route requires a SELT.
You usually need UKVI for routes such as skilled worker visas where a SELT is specified, courses below degree level on a student visa, and some pre-sessional English programmes.

The rule that protects you: get the requirement in writing from the institution or check your exact visa route on the official government list before booking. Never infer it from a forum post.
How to book IELTS for UKVI step by step
1. Confirm the exact test you need. UKVI Academic, UKVI General Training, or a Life Skills test — your visa route or institution letter names it.
2. Book through the UKVI pathway. On the IDP or British Council booking site, select "IELTS for UKVI" explicitly. The systems list UKVI sittings separately from regular ones — this selection is the whole game.
3. Use the passport you will travel with. UKVI bookings require a valid passport in almost all cases, and the same document must be presented on test day. Details in our test-day ID guide.
4. Pay the UKVI fee and keep the confirmation. Expect a premium over the regular fee — current local prices are in our fees by country tables.
Check the cancellation terms before you pay: IELTS for UKVI refunds 75% if you cancel more than 14 days before the test, 50% within 14 days, 25% within two days and nothing on test day, and a transfer inside 14 days counts as a cancellation.

What are IELTS Life Skills A1, A2 and B1?
Life Skills is a separate, shorter test of speaking and listening only, used for specific UK routes — typically family visas (A1), extension routes (A2, in some cases), and settlement or citizenship (B1).
It is pass/fail rather than band-scored, and it cannot be used for study or work routes that require full IELTS. If your route names Life Skills, book exactly that level; a higher level or a full IELTS does not substitute in either direction.
How much more does IELTS UKVI cost?
Expect a meaningful premium over the regular fee — the exact amount is set per country, but the UKVI version is consistently the more expensive product because of the SELT security overhead. Life Skills tests, being shorter, usually cost less than full UKVI IELTS.

Budget for the whole journey, not just the sitting: if you might need a resit, that is the UKVI fee again unless the One Skill Retake covers you.
The UK government approved the retake for UKVI in October 2023, and IELTS for UKVI on computer offers it at participating centres — but the British Council says it is not currently available for UKVI tests taken in the UK or USA.
So a UK-based candidate should budget for a full UKVI resit; a candidate testing elsewhere should ask the centre whether it runs the UKVI retake before relying on it as a safety net.

What does the UKVI Test Report Form look like?
An IELTS for UKVI result is issued as a TRF that carries a UKVI number alongside the usual details — your four section bands, overall band, photo, and TRF number. The Home Office verifies the result electronically against the SELT records when you apply.
Practically, this means two things. First, keep the UKVI number with your visa paperwork; the application form asks for it. Second, the result works "downwards" — a UKVI TRF is also acceptable wherever regular IELTS is, so if part of your plan is UK-visa-bound and part is not, one UKVI sitting can cover both.
IELTS for UKVI is delivered only in the fully digital format — IELTS confirmed that the SELT is not offered with Writing on Paper — and IELTS.org gives 1–5 days for UKVI results, the same as IELTS on computer; see our results timeline guide. The same two-year validity applies.
Should you prepare differently for IELTS UKVI?
No — and this is genuinely good news. Because the exam content is identical, every hour of standard IELTS preparation transfers completely: the same Reading question types, the same Writing tasks, the same Speaking format.
The only UKVI-specific preparation is administrative rehearsal: know the enhanced check-in procedure, bring the right passport, and arrive earlier than you would for a regular sitting, since security processing takes longer.
For the test itself, prepare exactly as you otherwise would — diagnose with a timed mock, then drill your weakest sections. The Home Office cares about the number on the TRF, and that number responds to practice, not to which version of the sitting you booked.
Common IELTS UKVI booking mistakes
Booking regular IELTS when the route needs a SELT. The most expensive error, discovered only at visa application. The result cannot be upgraded — the test must be resat under UKVI conditions.
Booking UKVI when regular would do. Wasted premium and reduced centre choice. Degree-level applicants should ask their university first.
Assuming scores differ. They do not — same test, same descriptors. Your preparation transfers exactly, so measure your gap with a timed mock and target the score your route requires using the band score calculator.
